Teejay,

I think we all end up in situations like that at some point in our lives. I'm no relationship expert, but at least you can see that you were in an unfair situation.

The best we can do is recognize, learn, and improve. You may not be able to go back, but you can always go forward.

Omg. I just feel sad. I've actually been out of a relationship where I (I think) was getting advantage of everything in the relationship.

I can't go back and probably is for the best. I might be keeping her from getting the right guy for her.

That's a good point, Beth. I guess I've always just been enamored with the "unconditional love" side of the story. The ending doesn't reinforce the lesson that it's not ok to take and take and take without giving, but the progression of the story may kind of infer it? Honestly, I think Shel's "children's" stories are usually better suited for adults! Glad you liked my interpretation.

I like your perspective on the story. Truthfully, I've always hated the book because it says it's okay to selfishly take from people (or from nature) because they're happy to sacrifice themselves for you. I would have liked the story if the boy/man had realized the consequences of his actions, but instead we get an "it's okay because we're friends again" ending.

I guess it's up to the reader to find a useful message in the story -- you obviously did a fantastic job.
